How to Make a Highlight Reel That Actually Gets You Recruited

Highlight Factory·Jul 10, 2026·6 min read

A great highlight reel is the single most important asset in your recruiting toolkit. Coaches watch hundreds of them — most in the first fifteen seconds. This guide walks through exactly what to put in yours, how to order it, and the common mistakes that get reels closed early.

Lead with your best three plays

Coaches decide fast. Put your three strongest, most representative plays right at the top — before any intro card, before music builds. If the first plays are elite, they keep watching.

Keep it short

Aim for three to four minutes. A reel that runs long signals you couldn't tell which plays mattered. Every clip should earn its place.

Make yourself easy to find

  • Use a spotlight or arrow so the coach never hunts for you.
  • Open with a title card: name, position, grad year, height, and contact.
  • Show jersey number clearly in the first clip.
The reel's job isn't to show every good thing you did. It's to make a coach want to see you play live.

Let the tool do the tedious part

Cutting a reel by hand takes hours. Highlight Factory finds your best moments in uploaded game footage automatically, so you spend your time choosing plays instead of scrubbing timelines.
